Race the Runway
August 16, 2014
One of the most interesting events we took the RR14 to this summer was Race the Runway 2014 in Smith’s Falls, Ontario. Smith’s Falls is just an hour away from campus, and for a Saturday of racecar action we were willing to go for a drive.
Race the runway is an opportunity for people to bring out their favourite cars and aim to max out their speedometer. Runway E6 at the Smiths Falls regional airport is shut down, and a ½ mile radar clocked speed run is set-up for cars of all kinds.
For a car with a tiny engine, an emphasis on fuel efficiency, and a transmission that is gear limited to somewhere near 120 km/h…… a top speed event is something you wouldn’t expect to see us at.
Being car nuts though we brought RR14 out to the airfield to show people what we’ve been up to all year at Carleton, and to enjoy all the awesome cars ripping their way down the runway.
At the end of the day, the fastest car through the speed trap was a 2012 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Stradal, with a custom gearbox. The Lambo raced through the ½ mile in 8.9 seconds, at a top speed of 330 km/h.
We’re looking forward to bringing out both the RR15 and RR15E to Smiths Falls in 2015, after we’ve returned from competition in Barrie and Lincoln. Maybe next year we’ll hit the runway just for fun (we can always make other cars seems faster).
