January Update

January 24, 2015

With a new year comes a new push from the team to get the RR15 and RR15E built and running. By January 4th, both of our major frame structures were completed and ready to be fit with all of our major brackets. Again accuracy is everything and our suspension points remain identical on both cars thanks to our new jig.

You can tell everyone was pretty pleased with the progress, smiles all around.

We’re now pushing hard to get both chassis rolling by the end of the month. This includes having all of our suspension arms, springs & dampers, wheel uprights, spindles, bearings, brake system, steering, seat, and engine mounts installed.

It’s a long list and there is no end of jobs to turn, mill, weld, and glue.

Our spindles, uprights and brakes have gone through a major re-design this year. Lighter, stronger, more resistant to thermal strain, and all around more awesome.

These pieces represent months of our time in the machine shop. We’d like to thank Alex, Kevin, and Ian in the Mech and Aero Machine shop for all their help and hard work.

Finally, our powertrain development continues to move forward. Before Christmas we got our EMRAX electric motor spinning for the first time. With a 26 volt power supply we kept it running slow, and learned lots in advance of our upcoming full scale tests.

By the end of February the EMRAX will be sitting cozy in the RR15E and we will have 300 Volts at our disposal. Formula SAE Electric doesn’t seem so far away now.
